Why Light-Gauge Steel?

Still thinking about framing in wood? Think again! When it comes to framing your tiny house, light-gauge steel is superior to wood in every way. Here’s why:

  • Lightweight – SmartBuild light-gauge steel frames are 30% to 50% lighter than traditional wood framing. That means you’ll need fewer hands to lift and secure your wall and roof panels when it comes time to build. Our lightweight frames also translate into real savings in gas and engine power when you hit the road with your tiny house!
  • Eliminates Measuring, Cutting & Material Waste – Ideal for the DIY builder, every piece of your SmartBuild frame is cut and rolled precisely to the size and shape required. YOU WON’T HAVE TO MEASURE OR CUT A SINGLE PIECE OF MATERIAL FOR YOUR FRAME, and there’s absolutely no material is waste. Could we make it any easier? (Correct answer: “No!”)
  • Design Flexibility – Bent and shaped to order, SmartBuild’s light-gauge-steel frames offer a degree of design flexibility that that can be difficult, or impossible, to realize in wood-framed construction.
  • Strong, True, and Stable – SmartBuild studs will not bow, twist, or bend, and they do not expand or contract in reaction to changes in weather. All studs are sized precisely, and the framing is exact. As a result, your walls are straight, your corners true, and your doors and windows close without binding.
  • Durable, Fire & Insect Resistant – Unlike wood frames, SmartBuild light-gauge-steel frames are non-combustible, impervious to rot, mold, mildew, and damage caused by insects, termites, and other pests. Simply put, when you build with light-gauge steel, you’re building for a lifetime.
  • Environmentally Friendly – SmartBuild light-gauge-steel frames are made from an average of 67% recycled material. In addition, they have significantly fewer toxins to irritate asthma and allergy sufferers.
