10 Strategies for Creating an Energy-Efficient Metal Building

Metal buildings designed to be energy efficient will minimize heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, lower operating costs, improve indoor comfort, and enhance sustainability. Check out these ten ways to make metal buildings more energy-efficient so you can save money, create a more comfortable indoor environment, and make other metal structure owners green with envy!

1. Insulation

Adding insulation to a metal structure will decrease condensation and minimize heat transfer creating a more comfortable temperature in summer and winter. Insulating the walls, roof, and floors with a condensation-proof material at the recommended R-value will pay off by producing lower energy bills. There are several insulation options for metal structures, including fiberglass, rigid board, fabric liner, and spray foam, each of which has different advantages.

2. Windows and Doors

Install energy-efficient windows and doors with proper sealing and insulation. Look for windows and doors with low-emissivity (low-E) coatings and double or triple glazing to reduce heat transfer. Opting for energy-efficient glazing and well-insulated openings minimizes heat transfer.

3. Roofing

Choose a reflective or light-colored metal roof to reflect solar heat and reduce the cooling load on the structure. Roofing can have the greatest impact on the energy use of a building. A light-colored, more reflective roof can stay up to 55ºF cooler than dark metal roofs, as reported by the Heat Island Group of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Additionally, installing proper insulation in the roof will minimize heat transfer.

4. Ventilation

Implement effective ventilation systems to improve indoor air quality and reduce the reliance on mechanical cooling. Consider natural ventilation methods such as using operable windows, louvers, or vents to allow cross-ventilation and airflow.

5. Lighting

Utilize energy-efficient lighting solutions such as LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs. LEDs are highly efficient, have a longer lifespan, and produce less heat than traditional incandescent or fluorescent lights. Residential LEDs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.

6. HVAC Systems

Install energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Choose HVAC equipment with high energy efficiency ratings and ensure regular maintenance to optimize performance.

7. Solar Panels

Consider installing solar panels on the metal structure to generate renewable energy and reduce reliance on the grid. Solar panels can offset the energy consumption of the building and potentially lead to long-term cost savings. Metal roofs provide an optimal foundation for solar panels because they are longer-lasting and more durable than other roofing materials.

8. Smart Controls

Implement smart technologies and controls to monitor and optimize energy usage. This can include programmable thermostats, occupancy sensors, and automated systems to regulate lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy and need.

9. Energy Audits

Conduct regular energy audits to identify inefficient areas and develop improvement strategies. Professionals are available to inspect your business and assess any inefficiencies, including window leaks, holes in your insulation, or where insulation should be installed.  A professional energy audit can provide insights into specific areas that need attention and suggest tailored solutions.

10. Landscaping

Consider the surrounding landscape to optimize energy efficiency. Planting trees or installing shading devices can help block direct sunlight and reduce the cooling load on the metal structure. Xeriscaping, which means planting native trees, flowers, and grasses, lowers outdoor water use by 30-50% and reduces yard maintenance.
